This local couple reached out to me for outdoor portraits in the Lake Tahoe area. We discussed several locations, from scenic lakeshores to breathtaking mountain vistas. By drawing on my years of experience as a wedding and portrait photographer in the region, I recommended some of the best photo spots. I also provided feedback on their outfit choices, helping them select clothing that would complement the natural colors of the landscape.

Since they love the mountains and wanted to include their German Shorthaired Pointer, I suggested Donner Summit—one of my favorite outdoor locations in Truckee. With dramatic peaks, golden light, and stunning views, it was the perfect setting for their session.

In the photo above, I positioned the couple in a sunbeam, ensuring the light matched the exposure of Donner Peak’s summit. This contrast makes them stand out beautifully against the shadowed mountainside, drawing your eye directly towards them.

One of the Best Places for Couples Photos in Lake Tahoe

I began my journey as a Lake Tahoe wedding and portrait photographer in 2011. Since then, Donner Summit has remained one of my favorite spots to capture people against the area’s breathtaking mountain landscapes. With easy access and stunning views, it’s possible to enjoy the beauty without the crowds.

For this session, we divided the shoot into segments—some with their dog and some focused solely on the couple. I always prioritize natural expressions over stiff poses. So for their couple’s portraits, my goal was to capture their genuine smiles and heartfelt connection.

Their dog is exceptionally well-trained, which made my job easy. Since he’s an important part of their family, I made sure to capture meaningful moments of all three of them together. I captured a ton of great photos! Here are a few of my favorites.

As the sun nears the horizon, I often position myself to capture the light at just the right angle. This creates a natural backlighting effect which adds a glowing rim light around the couple’s faces and bodies. It is a stunning, artistic effect that many photographers strive to replicate in the studio.

For the photo below, I intentionally aimed my camera toward the setting sun. By using a smaller aperture, I created a striking sunburst effect, while the couple and their dog formed a dramatic silhouette against the glowing sky.

In order to add variety to their photo collection, we drove to another spot on the summit where they changed outfits. There, we captured the final rays of golden sunset light.
