During the 2020 shutdowns, large weddings came to a halt. Some couples postponed. Others stepped back, re-evaluated their priorities, and realized getting married didn’t have to wait. This Lake Tahoe elopement on Eagle Rock shows how meaningful a small, simple wedding in Lake Tahoe can be when the focus stays on the people and the place, not the production.
Instead of a busy venue, out-of-state travel, and a packed guest list, this couple chose something quiet. They wanted to elope outdoors with two close friends and exchange vows somewhere grounded and personal. Eagle Rock fit perfectly: a short hike, time with their closest friends, and sweeping views of Lake Tahoe.

Getting Ready at the Couple’s Cabin
I met the couple at their cabin in Truckee. With only two close friends present, getting ready felt calm and intentional. No rush, no timeline pressure. With travel restrictions in place, three of the bride’s friends joined via video call, offering support and cheering her on.
In the photo below, I wanted to capture the bride looking in the mirror with her friends on her laptop screen. Since the bathroom was small, I had to stand in the bathtub to get everything in the frame. You can see me in the top right corner of the bride’s screen!

As the bride’s best friend helped her with her wedding dress and final touches, I quietly documented the action.

First Look in Their Backyard
Before heading to the lake, they chose to do a first look in the backyard. It gave them a quiet moment to settle in, shake off some nerves, and reconnect. It also meant the small group could travel together afterward, keeping the day streamlined and relaxed.

Driving to the West Shore and Hiking Up to Eagle Rock
From Truckee, we drove to Tahoe’s West Shore and started the short climb up to the top of Eagle Rock. The trail is quick but rewarding, opening up views of the lake after winding around the backside of the formation. Afternoon light filtered through the trees and I quietly moved around the couple to capture the story of their hike.
The bride wore Teva sandals for the hike and carried her wedding shoes and bouquet in her hand.

Once on top of Eagle Rock, the bride took a selfie of their small group. Of course, I moved into position and captured the “meta selfie” to document the moment!

Elopement Ceremony on Top of Eagle Rock with Views of Lake Tahoe
At the top, the lake stretched out in every direction. The late-day sun hit their chosen ceremony spot at exactly the right angle, giving everything a clean, warm glow. With gorgeous views of mountains and the setting sun to the west, and Lake Tahoe to the east, I captured a couple quick portraits of the bride in this amazing setting!

Then the ceremony began. It was just us and their two friends. The groom’s childhood friend had completed an online officiant certification in the weeks prior, which kept the ceremony intimate and personal.

The couple exchanged vows and added small, meaningful objects to a special “Time Machine” box. Each item represents something unique in their relationship, and they plan to open the box at a future anniversary as a way to remember their engagement.

Sunset Wedding Portraits on Eagle Rock
After the ceremony, we spent a few more minutes on the summit to capture some sunset photos with Lake Tahoe in the background.

Although their family couldn’t travel to California, a short video call let them share the views and the moment with parents and siblings back home.

A Celebratory Toast and Wedding Cake by the Water
While we captured a few portraits, their friends went ahead to set up a lakeside picnic at the Kaspian Day Use Area with cake and drinks. It was a great way to end the afternoon and it suited the day perfectly: relaxed, thoughtful, and focused on connection and the natural setting.
