This Fallen Leaf Lake wedding took place in one of the more secluded and unique settings in the Lake Tahoe area. Tucked just around the corner from the lake everyone knows, Fallen Leaf Lake offers a quieter, more private alternative.
It’s also a place with a certain level of exclusivity, especially when it comes to weddings. Many visitors find themselves wondering, “Can you get married at Fallen Leaf Lake?” or “How do you get married at the Fallen Leaf Lake Chapel?” The reality is that access is limited, and weddings here usually happen because of a personal connection to the community.
For this bride, that connection ran deep. Her grandparents had a cabin here, and she grew up spending summers at the lake. Getting married at Fallen Leaf Lake wasn’t just about the location. For her, it was a return to a place that had been part of her life for years.
This couple chose my all-day wedding photography package, which allowed me to capture them getting ready, the ceremony, portraits, and late-night dancing by the lake.
Getting Ready at the Cabins
The bride and groom got ready in separate cabins near the lake, both within walking distance of the chapel.
When it comes to the ‘Getting Ready’ portion of the day, my approach is deeply rooted in documentary photography. However, I always prioritize the people over the process. I’ve found that the best photos aren’t just a result of good lighting; they are a result of trust. By respecting the energy of the room and building a genuine connection with you and your inner circle first, I’m able to capture those spontaneous, honest moments that only happen when everyone feels truly at ease.
The morning felt relaxed and social. At the dock, the bride spent time with her closest girlfriends, enjoying the lake before getting dressed. Back at the cabin, her mom helped her into her dress while her friends looked on.
Meanwhile, the groom and his friends took full advantage of the location. They spent time at the water, even jumping into the cold water for a swim before getting ready.
Later, back inside the cabin, everyone got dressed. I photographed him ironing his tie and finishing final details in the mirror, with his sisters nearby. Having family involved in these moments always adds another layer to the story.
Ceremony at Fallen Leaf Chapel
The ceremony took place at Saint Francis of the Mountains Church, often called the Fallen Leaf Chapel.
If you’ve ever passed by this chapel—maybe on your way to Glen Alpine Falls—you’ve probably wondered if weddings are open to the public. The short answer is: not usually. Most couples who marry here have a long-standing connection to Fallen Leaf Lake, which is part of what keeps the experience so intimate.
The chapel itself is small and rustic, built from local stone and set among the trees. With limited seating inside, guests gathered both indoors and just outside the open doors, creating a natural indoor-outdoor feel.
One of the bride’s friends officiated their ceremony inside the small, rustic church.
This small historic chapel is one of the defining features of a Fallen Leaf Lake wedding. Seating inside is limited, so for larger groups, additional benches are often set up outside. Guests can still see and hear everything through the open doors, which creates a really unique indoor-outdoor feel.
Afterward, the couple rang the chapel bell just outside, a family tradition they were especially excited to continue. Guests gathered nearby with hugs and laughter before we took a few portraits in front of the chapel.
Guests gathered around the entrance to congratulate them with hugs and laughter before we took a few portraits in front of the chapel.
Portraits at Glen Alpine Falls
As guests made their way to the Fallen Leaf Lake Marina, we took a short detour to Glen Alpine Falls for portraits.
One of the advantages of getting married at Fallen Leaf Lake is how close everything is. Within minutes, you can move from a chapel setting to a quiet forest and waterfall.
We spent time exploring the rocks near the waterfall and the surrounding forest. The sound of the water and the cooler air created a different pace compared to the ceremony.
Boat Cruise and Lakeside Reception at the Marina
Before the reception, the couple and a few close friends took a short pontoon boat ride on Fallen Leaf Lake.
When they returned, guests were gathered near the Fallen Leaf Marina, where the reception was set right on the beach.
Toasts took place by the water, with the lake and surrounding mountains in the background. The couple shared a few words with their guests, and the atmosphere felt more like a gathering of close friends than a formal event.
Dinner and cake cutting happened inside the Fallen Leaf Lake Store. Instead of a traditional cake, they had a five-tier “cheese cake” made from stacked rounds of different cheeses. It was a detail that fit the relaxed, personal nature of the day.
Dancing on the Beach at the Fallen Leaf Lake Marina
As the evening went on, a live band kicked things into gear.
A dance floor had been set up on the beach, and it quickly filled with guests. With the lake just steps away and music carrying through the trees, this part of the day reflected the couple perfectly. They wanted a lakeside party in the woods, and that’s exactly what it became.
