A Thunderbird Lodge wedding is one of the most iconic ways to get married in Lake Tahoe. First, the estate’s rich history sets it apart from any other venue on the lake. In addition, its private lakefront setting creates an unforgettable backdrop for a wedding celebration.
For this wedding, I provided full-day coverage. As a result, I was able to document the entire story from the quiet moments in the morning to the celebration on the water later that day.
To kick things off, here are a couple photos that show their wedding cruise aboard the famous Thunderbird Yacht!
Getting Ready at Thunderbird Lodge
I started the day photographing the bride and groom getting ready at Thunderbird Lodge. Both rooms have beautiful natural light, which made it perfect for capturing candid moments. Since I photographed the rehearsal dinner the day before, everyone was already comfortable with me being there.
A highlight was a champagne toast that made for a playful, memorable photo with the bride and bridesmaids.
Before the ceremony, I went outside with the bride and groom separately for a few quick portraits around the historic grounds.
A Lakeside Ceremony
Unless your wedding is on a pier, this ceremony site is one of the closest lakeside venues in Lake Tahoe. The grassy lawn faces the water, and throughout the ceremony, you can hear it gently lapping against the rocky shoreline.
Since the Thunderbird Lodge sits on a small point that juts out into the lake, the panoramic views make this venue one of the most beautiful places to get married in Lake Tahoe!
When it came to the ceremony, this couple wanted to keep it short and simple. Two close friends officiated. The bride and groom exchanged rings and shared their vows.
Due to the shape of the lakeside lawn, the ceremony aisle is actually quite short. So, I made sure I was ready in order to capture some great moments from the recessional.
As always, I keep my camera up to capture that second kiss!
Post-Ceremony Cruise on the Thunderbird Yacht
Most couples opt for a post-ceremony cruise on the Thunderbird Yacht. Due to the number of seats, there is usually space for 10–12 people on the cruise. Fortunately, there is always a seat for the photographer so that I can document the experience.
If your wedding is in Lake Tahoe and you have the opportunity to get on a boat following your ceremony, take it!
Outdoor Reception by the Water
While guests enjoyed cocktails on the north side of Thunderbird Lodge, the team at Blue Sky Events transformed the ceremony site. By the time we returned from the cruise, the reception was ready for dinner.
Sunset Portraits at Thunderbird Lodge
As the sun dipped behind the mountains, I photographed a short set of sunset portraits. In the image below, I shot from across the beach with a telephoto lens. This compressed the scene and included the iconic Thunderbird Lodge architecture, along with the lake, trees, and mountains in the background.
The alpenglow effect turned the clouds pink and orange, which I captured with an artistic silhouette of the couple.
With a different exposure and a different angle, I captured the photo below of the bride and groom enjoying this amazing location!
On the walk back to the reception, the bride and groom paused beneath one of the lanterns along the path. I made the photo below as the light wrapped around them for a brief moment.
Champagne Toasts and Dancing Under the Stars
Back at the reception, the couple sat at their sweetheart table by the lake. Candles lit the table as evening settled in, followed by toasts and speeches from family and the wedding party.
With only string lights overhead, the reception lighting was intentionally low. I supplemented the ambient light with off-camera flash, which allowed me to capture the couple’s first dance while keeping the scene natural and moody.
The parent dances came next, and I love these moments between the couple and their parents.
