This intimate Sand Harbor wedding in Lake Tahoe reminded me that smaller weddings can feel just as full of emotion as larger celebrations. With just a handful of close family members, the day centered on the couple, their relationships, and the stunning Lake Tahoe shoreline.
When the couple reached out, they were exploring several Lake Tahoe wedding venues. Over the past decade, I’ve photographed weddings, elopements, and portrait sessions at nearly every established location in the area. We met in person and I shared my perspective on the pros and cons of each venue. After selecting Sand Harbor, they chose my hourly wedding photography package. This was perfect for the few hours needed to capture their afternoon.
By the time the wedding day arrived, everything came together smoothly. Lake Tahoe officiant Meredith Richmond guided the ceremony, which was meaningful and personal for the couple. After a champagne toast, we captured portraits at a nearby overlook before heading to dinner at Edgewood Tahoe. The day flowed naturally, and the focus remained on the couple and their closest loved ones.
Getting Ready
I arrived early in order to capture the groom and a few family members preparing the space. In addition to setting up a small champagne and snacks table, the groom wanted to create a small trail of flower petals for his bride to follow to the ceremony site.
In the photo below, the Ramada appears behind the groom.
Next, I photographed the bride’s arrival and her relatives sharing sweet moments in the parking area.
A few minutes before the ceremony began, I quickly captured a few natural-lit portraits of the bride, framed between pine trees.
Arm-in-arm, the bride and her father found the trail of rose petals and began walking to the ceremony site.
They followed the petals through the Ramada, to the small point where everyone stood, overlooking Lake Tahoe.
Sand Harbor has many small paths that lead to overlooks and coves. This path took them past a small beach and some large bushes. You can see the rose petals on the ground, which showed them the way.
The Ceremony
If you are getting married at Sand Harbor State Park, your reservation gives you access to The Ramada structure and the area next to it. This area sits right on the water, offering unobstructed views of the lake and surrounding mountains. It is one of the few venues in Tahoe where the shoreline is part of the ceremony backdrop. Since this couple married on a cool and showery spring day, the typical crowds were nowhere to be seen.
The standing, brief ceremony allowed me to capture many special moments, from the couple exchanging vows to the celebratory smiles and hugs afterward.
The groom’s family traveled all the way from Europe, so I made sure to capture them hugging their son and celebrating together.
After their intimate Sand Harbor wedding ceremony, they celebrated with champagne and light snacks.
A light drizzle began, and umbrellas came out. This moment with the groom’s brother sheltering the couple was particularly memorable.
Everyone headed back to the Ramada to wait out the rain for a few minutes.
Portraits Around the Park
Soon the rain stopped, and we took advantage of Sand Harbor’s natural beauty for some couples portraits. In a short amount of time, we explored several spots around the shoreline and park. I use a range of fun, easy techniques that help my couples relax in front of the camera. By guiding them through this process, their attention stays on each other and I am able to capture some beautiful moments that don’t feel posed or awkward.
Even with a small wedding, there is room for a variety of photos: intimate close-ups, scenic wide-angle shots, and creative compositions that highlight the amazing Lake Tahoe landscape.
They were adventurous, even getting their feet a little wet for these photos.
Tips for Planning a Sand Harbor Wedding
Small weddings at Sand Harbor can make photography and planning more straightforward. Fewer guests mean fewer logistics, less stress, and more time to enjoy the day with the people who matter most. This also lets me capture interactions closely, including genuine reactions and quiet moments.
Sand Harbor offers a natural lakeside setting. The Ramada is available for meals or small gatherings and provides shelter in case of inclement weather. While not a traditional ballroom, the location more than makes up for it with views that are difficult to match elsewhere in Lake Tahoe.
The best times for a Sand Harbor wedding are fall, winter, and spring. Summer weekends can be extremely crowded, with parking typically full before 9 a.m. Planning a date during the shoulder seasons gives couples a much better chance of enjoying the park with minimal public interference.
Photography rules have recently changed. Even with a reservation, taking photos outside the designated wedding area may result in a fine. Photo permits are currently $75/day, which is worth it to access the park’s most picturesque spots.
Dear Chris,
This is Giuli and JC 🙂 we excited to reach out to you. We are planning our wedding (just the 2 of us ) for the 11/22 in sand harbor state park. We would love to know what you charge for 1 hour of photography and if we need to take care of anything else but the park reservation and extra photography permit.
Thank you very much in advance.
Have a great week.
