The week before their wedding at Everline Resort and Spa, I met this couple for a Lake Tahoe engagement session on a boat. Over the years, I’ve photographed countless couples on boats, but I was especially excited to capture portraits and candid moments on a beautiful wooden HackerCraft.
Before they booked the boat with a local charter company, we went over the plan in detail. Shooting on the water at this elevation can be very bright, and I wanted to make sure we captured the most scenic backgrounds with the best natural lighting. So, I shared recommendations for the best time of day and the ideal Lake Tahoe shoreline locations to get the perfect light.

Starting at the Dock
I met the couple at the bride’s family cabin in Lake Tahoe. To kick off the session, I captured a few candid portraits of them on the dock. The afternoon sun backlit the scene, casting a warm glow against the darker forest behind them.
In a short amount of time, I focused on two goals. Since we were meeting in person for the first time, I wanted to chat with the couple and help them feel comfortable in front of the camera. Second, I wanted to capture some portraits on the dock by the cabin. These shots added variety to their engagement session, complementing the photos we would soon capture on the water.
The lighting was gorgeous, and we got a ton of great images. Here are a couple of my favorites from the dock.

On the Water: Candid Moments and Connection
During our time on the boat, my goal was to capture as many candid, authentic moments as possible. While many photographers focus on posed images, I love documenting the natural connection between my couples.
On the water, I aimed to highlight their personalities and the bond they share. Set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Tahoe and this gorgeous boat, we got some incredible shots!

After we turned on some tunes and started talking about their upcoming wedding, I began capturing even more beautiful moments.
Of course, a small boat offers limited space to move. But with a creative eye, I noticed some artistic angles and unique ways to photograph them. For example, by lowering my camera, I used the lines of the wooden boat to naturally lead the viewer’s eye toward the bride-to-be.

The sounds of the water and the sunlight reflecting off the lake all added natural layers to these engagement photos. To mix things up, we played their First Dance song. They got up and started practicing their dance for the wedding reception.

For the photo below, they had a specific engagement photo in mind. So, we turned the boat around for the best lighting angle.

Playing with Light: Golden Hour Shots
As golden hour approached, I focused on capturing a mix of portraits and candid moments, making the most of the soft, warm light on the water.
For even more variety in their engagement photos, the bride’s dad met us on the water, and I jumped onto a second boat. From there, I could capture sweeping wide-angle shots of the couple and the full boat. These photos show the scene from a fresh perspective, and include the mountains and forests that surround the lake. I love the action photos of them driving the boat along the Lake Tahoe shoreline at sunset.

Coincidentally, some wildfire smoke drifted over the lake that afternoon, softening the light and adding a warm, rich glow as the sun began to set. I really like the dramatic feel of the next photo.

For photo below, I adjusted my camera settings and intentionally stopped down, exposing for the bright sunset and clouds. This created a perfect silhouette of the couple. Set against the highlight of the sun reflected on the water behind them, it makes a unique, artistic portrait!

Sunset Finale and Closing Thoughts
This session was one of a kind. I don’t often get to photograph engagement sessions on a classic wooden boat in Lake Tahoe. It came with unique challenges, but it reminded me why I love documenting authentic, unscripted moments. Their energy, trust, and openness made it easy to capture photos that feel genuine, emotional, and timeless.
