This Olympic Valley engagement session had everything I love—golden light, wide-open meadows, and an outdoorsy couple. We wandered through the tall grass with their labradoodle leading the way. All the while, we chased that perfect late afternoon glow.

We began the session in Olympic Valley with a mix of relaxed portraits and candid moments in the golden meadows. Afterward, we made our way down to Lake Tahoe. By the time we reached the pier, we were just in time to catch the sunset. The soft alpenglow reflected beautifully over the calm, glassy water. Altogether, the couple received 149 images from their engagement session. Here are a few of my favorites!

I always love when couples bring their dog along, especially when they’re as well-trained as this guy. He stayed right where he needed to, which allowed me to focus on their real connection. As a result, we were able to capture plenty of great portraits of them as a family.

Anyone who’s spent time in Olympic Valley knows how striking the wide-open views are. For these photos, we decided to walk farther into the valley to take full advantage of the tall grass and green pines as a scenic backdrop. Meanwhile, we left their well-behaved dog happily tied up nearby, keeping watch.

Sticking to our plan, we wrapped up in Olympic Valley and made the short drive to Lake Tahoe’s shoreline, where we caught the soft alpenglow of sunset glowing across the mountains.

I love ending a session with an artistic silhouette that highlights the beauty of Lake Tahoe. For the final shot, I got low by the water’s edge and stopped down my exposure to bring out the deep blues and purples of the mountain sunset.

I waited for the perfect moment. When the couple stepped between the pylons of the pier, the composition formed a clean, triangular symmetry. The lines of the pier naturally draw your eye straight to them.
