This sunny Gar Woods wedding took place on a bright June afternoon in Lake Tahoe. Gar Woods Grill & Pier is one of Carnelian Bay’s most popular lakefront restaurants and a favorite spot for both locals and visitors. The grassy lawn is a beautiful venue for smaller Lake Tahoe weddings, just a few steps from the water.
This couple wanted a fun and casual celebration with their favorite people. From the beginning, they told me they trusted me to document the day as I saw it. They chose my hourly photography package, which allowed me to be a part of their day for a few hours. I photographed their first look, ceremony, and lunchtime reception.
First Look in the Shade
When I arrived, they were ready for their first look. To avoid any squinting, I found a shaded spot on the side of the building, a small area of greenery that offers a bit of privacy away from the busy pier.
The groom waited with their dog, and the bride approached along a paved walkway. Afterward, I photographed a few portraits of them and their dog.
Ceremony on the Lawn
The Gar Woods ceremony location is on the lawn right next to the lake. By having your reception at the restaurant—and considering the overall cost of a Gar Woods wedding—it’s a really solid option if you want to get married in Lake Tahoe by the water without overcomplicating things.
The groom’s father officiated, using a couple readings from The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran.
A highlight of their ceremony was definitely the vows. They struck that balance you hope for but don’t always get. Their hand-written vows were funny, honest, and emotional.
As a photographer, I love moments like this because the expressions are real and constantly changing. This couple is fun, playful, and has a great sense of humor, so there were a lot of genuine reactions to capture as they exchanged vows.
Cocktail Hour and Portraits by the Lake
After the ceremony, guests stayed on the lawn for a relaxed cocktail hour. They had lawn games, oversized Jenga, and the kids ran around chasing giant bubbles.
At one point, the bride grabbed one of the bubble makers and started creating huge floating bubbles for the kids. I ended up with one of my favorite images from the day right there.
While guests began making their way upstairs for lunch, we slipped away for a few portraits by the lake and on the beach.
The midday sun was strong. Fortunately, the bride had a white parasol that ended up being perfect. It was great as a prop, but also as a way to soften the light. It created just enough shade and bounce to keep things natural while still embracing that bright summer feel.
With the beach being in full midday sun, I used an off-camera studio light to fill in the shadows a little. Their dog, Josie Bear, followed them throughout our mini portrait session. She even used the train of the wedding dress as a beach blanket.
Gar Woods Wedding Reception
The reception took place upstairs inside Gar Woods, in a private event space overlooking the lake. Even though the busy restaurant is just a floor below, this space feels very private. The east-facing wall is mostly windows, with views of Lake Tahoe and the Gar Woods pier.
The bride and groom put together all of the details for the tables themselves. They decorated with colorful florals, stacks of books by authors they love, and framed postcards of artwork that felt personal to them.
Guests enjoyed appetizers, a hot lunch buffet, and of course, the famously strong and fruity cocktails- the Wet Woody drinks, for which the restaurant is known.
The couple really wanted their reception to feel relaxed, more like spending time with their favorite people than following a formal timeline.
Lunch was followed by a series of toasts that turned into one of the highlights of the day. The parents brought humor and warmth, and the bride’s sister shared stories from early in their relationship, including a surprise foam board that recreated a text conversation from after their first date.
I ended up staying a bit longer than planned to keep photographing through the speeches, and I’m really glad I did. The reactions, the laughter, and the small in-between moments during that time are often the photos that become favorites.
A Sunny Gar Woods Wedding in Lake Tahoe
This sunny Gar Woods wedding was a great example of how a simple, well-planned day can come together naturally. A lakeside ceremony, time with close friends and family, and a relaxed reception all in one location made everything feel easy and connected.
Gar Woods works especially well for couples who want a Lake Tahoe wedding that’s less formal and more focused on the experience—being outside, enjoying the lake, and spending time with the people who matter most.
