VENUE GUIDE

Thunderbird Lodge Wedding Photography

Are you looking for a historic Lake Tahoe wedding venue that is truly one of a kind? The Thunderbird Lodge features stone buildings artistically woven into a forested peninsula, a secret tunnel, an opium den, and an underground swimming pool. Take a walk through time as you enjoy the sweeping lake views, unique architecture, and granite pathways. You can even tour the lake on the incredible Thunderbird yacht!

Thunderbird Lodge is a historic gem

A wealthy businessman and conservationist, the eclectic George Whittell Jr. owned 40,000 acres along Lake Tahoe’s eastern shoreline. He built the Thunderbird Lodge in 1936.  In the beginning, he planned to build a ski resort and casino. But over time, he changed his mind. Instead, he decided instead to keep it pristine, except for his own mansion.

The history of George Whittell Jr. and his Thunderbird Lodge includes a pet elephant, a pet lion, six custom-built Duesenberg automobiles, a 600-ft long secret tunnel, and a 55-ft wooden speedboat. The Thunderbird Lodge Preservation Society currently owns and maintains this special piece of Lake Tahoe’s past.

The lodge’s stunning location, rich history, and unique architecture are legendary. Stone walkways, unique architecture and boulders rising right out of the water all offer a beautiful backdrop for your wedding. A lakeside lawn sets the stage for an event of up to 100 guests. As sailboats cruise by on a summer afternoon, your wedding guests will hear the waves lapping against the rocky shoreline just feet away.

You can enjoy a lakeside meal with your guests as the sunset lights up over Tahoe. Depending on the weather, get your groove on under the stars or in the lighthouse building, which overlooks the water with floor-to-ceiling windows. This venue is a truly special place, and I am honored to be able to photograph weddings at Thunderbird Lodge.
