I photographed this beautiful fall wedding at Everline Resort & Spa. This is one of the most picturesque times of the year in Lake Tahoe with crisp nights, warm sun, and aspen groves ablaze in gold and orange. These bursts of color make a perfect backdrop for wedding photos.

In addition to cool mountain air and golden leaves, fall also means fewer crowds in the Tahoe region. Since my wedding photography style is very informal and relaxed, the bride and groom simply enjoyed the day while I focused on capturing the special moments.

Getting Ready

In order to have more space to get ready, some brides choose a conference room at Everline Resort for hair and makeup appointments. At this wedding, I met the bride and bridesmaids at one of the rooms that overlooks The Pavilion. The soft, natural light near these large windows works well for getting ready photos.

Heading upstairs, I met the groom and his groomsmen in their hotel room. Like many guys on a wedding day, they were hanging out, drinking beer, and watching the football game. This was a good opportunity to photograph jackets, ties, and some of the controlled chaos that is is a wedding day. Some of these photos will be perfect for the couple’s wedding album. Once dressed, the guys stopped by Sandy’s Pub for another drink and more of the game.

The Ceremony

The day started out with raindrops and a steady mist. But moments before the ceremony began, the clouds lifted and the mountains came back into view. As the bride and her dad walked down the aisle, the wedding guests put away umbrellas and coats. The timing couldn’t have been better.

During a wedding ceremony, I focus on photographing all the special moments from the best vantage points. After so many years of photographing weddings, I know which lenses, focal lengths, and apertures work best. Overall my goal is to remain as unobtrusive as possible. But certain moments simply cannot be captured with a huge zoom lens. To truly capture the feeling of a moment, I sometimes need to be closer with a wider angle lens.

Wedding Reception

Considering the time of year, this couple made the right choice to have a tented wedding reception. Although Everline Resort has several large ballrooms for special events, this couple opted for a tent at The Pavilion. Compared to an indoor space, the tent allowed their guests close proximity to fresh air and starry views- two important reasons why they chose to get married in Lake Tahoe in the first place.

No matter the location, I focus on all the important events at a wedding reception. The first dances and cake-cutting are obviously some of the main highlights. By keeping my camera ready and joining the action on the dance floor, there are so many more special moments I can capture that could be an important part of a wedding day story.
