Can you imagine saying “I do” surrounded on by Lake Tahoe on all sides? And then, hopping into an old-fashioned “woody” boat for a celebratory cruise? At their Tahoe City dock wedding, Maggie and Sten exchanged vows with close family and friends on a small private pier in Hurricane Bay. They also took a little spin in a vintage motorboat to claim the victory. Since Maggie and Sten wanted a small Lake Tahoe wedding all along (and because a dock only has space for so many people), this intimate gathering was the right-sized celebration for them.
Owing to the postponement of so many large gatherings this past year, my focus turned towards small weddings and Lake Tahoe elopements. I even met a bride and groom before sunrise in freezing conditions for a winter Lake Tahoe elopement! Although Maggie and Sten’s wedding included more guests than an elopement, the feeling was similar. And the focus was the same. Rather than worry about a lengthy guest list and complex logistics, these two kept it perfectly simple.
Quite often, smaller weddings allow the bride and groom to spend more time with the people that know them best. I loved the moments between Maggie and her bridesmaids as they got ready. Getting married on a wooden dock in Lake Tahoe feels different than a “traditional” wedding. For one thing, no chairs! Also, the dock swayed under us as large boat wakes passed by! One of my favorite parts of the day was Maggies’ dad trying to start the boat engine before their romantic cruise. Nobody’s wedding goes exactly according to plan. I love photographing these authentic “hiccups” and plot twists along the way. After all these are the stories we talk about years later.
