There’s a reason the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe is one of the most popular wedding venues on the North Shore. This summer Tahoe Hyatt wedding took place on the Cottage Green, with open views of the lake and surrounding mountains. After the ceremony, the celebration moved straight into a packed reception in the Lakeside Ballroom. The day flowed easily, from meaningful moments by the water to a dance floor that stayed full all night.
I’ve photographed many weddings at the Hyatt over the years. I know how the light shifts across the lake throughout the day. I also know how each ceremony space feels at different times and how the reception energy builds after sunset. That experience matters, and it helps the full story of the day come together naturally.
Getting Ready at the Lakeside Cottages
Earlier in the day, the getting-ready moments were calm and unhurried. Family and the wedding party offered quiet support as the day began. These moments pass quickly, but they’re worth slowing down for. Shared glances. Steadying hands. Small moments of reassurance before everything moves forward.
As hair and makeup wrapped up, I stepped back to create a few artistic images from a different perspective. They capture the mood of the moment without interrupting it.
Some warm, colorful bokeh in the first image adds something interesting to an otherwise bland hotel room. In the image below, I timed some off-camera lighting to line up with a mist of hairspray.
As the bride’s mother helped her into her gown, I focused on the interaction itself. I worked through multiple layers of the scene to add depth to the frame.
I’m always looking for clean backgrounds. In this case, I positioned the bride’s head against open space in the room. This frame-within-a-frame approach helps the subject stand out while still including the surrounding details.
Each bridesmaid was an important part of the day. I focused on capturing their reactions as they saw the bride in her wedding dress for the first time.
By keeping a low profile in the room, I was able to capture those brief expressions as they happened.
Lakefront Ceremony on the Cottage Green
For their wedding, the couple chose a ceremony on the Cottage Green. This is a lakeside setting that sits close to the water’s edge. A small grove of large pine trees separates the lawn from the beach.
From a photographic perspective, I love this location for several reasons. First, the forest backdrop adds natural texture to the scene. In addition, the sun filters through the trees, creating a soft, luminous backlight that’s unique to this corner of the lake.
I always keep an eye on the parents of the couple during the ceremony in hopes of capturing their expressions and reactions.
Photographing a wedding ceremony is an exercise in focusing on the bigger picture as much as the smaller details. In the photo below, I zoomed in to capture the bride and groom holding hands.
Sunset Portraits by Lake Tahoe
After the ceremony, I found some beautiful light for couples portraits. We started on the Cottage Green and made our way to the Hyatt pier.
As the sun began to dip toward the horizon, the couple shared a special moment on the pier. They had planned a private tribute to the groom’s late father, quietly scattering his ashes into the lake. Documenting this from a distance allowed me to capture the moment, honoring his memory as the last light of the day faded over the Sierra.
Reception in the Lakeside Ballroom at the Tahoe Hyatt
Blue Sky Events kept the day running smoothly, with floral design by Martha Bernyk setting the tone for the reception. The award-winning dance band Hip Service brought serious energy to the night and had the dance floor full from the start. Some of my favorite moments from this Tahoe Hyatt wedding happened right here, so keep scrolling.
The reception opened with a first dance by the bride and groom.
Next came speeches and champagne toasts from the bride’s parents and members of the bridal party.
Last but not least, the bride and groom celebrated with the parent dances.
